GOD AT GROUND ZERO
by Curt Sewell (Master Books, 1997)
Introduction
I wrote this book primarily for students and their parents, and also for use
as a reference for people who were involved in teaching Creation-vs-Evolution
classes in churches and Christian youth groups. It is an account of how and
why I was "converted" from being a theistic evolutionist into becoming a
scientific creationist.
What's it all about?
This is a personal experience account of how a young Army technician became
one of the participants in the test explosion of the world's first atomic
weapon, that resulted in the ending of World War II. He went on to spend his
career as an engineer in nuclear science labs.
When he learned the foundational assumptions that science holds, and how they
sometimes violate physical scientific evidences, as well as the Word of God,
he began a long comparative study of facts and evidences in the Creation-vs-
Evolution controversy, and how these interact with important doctrines of
Biblical Christianity. This study resulted in his "conversion" from his
original 20-year belief in the scientific doctrine of gradual development of
our Earth and its inhabitants. He finally realized that a better explanation
was "In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth [and all of its
inhabitants.]."
The book describes many of the evidences, beliefs and philosophical
foundations of secular Evolutionism and Materialism, and contrasts them with
evidences and realities of the actual world around us, and of the Word of God
-- the Bible.
What does the term "Ground Zero" mean?
This term can have several meanings. It's the spot under the tower where
that bomb exploded, but it can also mean "the aiming point," or "the
epicenter," or "the point of origin." In particular God was at the "Ground
Zero" -- that first "point of action" -- at the creation of the Earth and the
Universe. He was the initial Creator, and is the final Maintainer. He is at
the "Ground Zero" of the life of all who try to serve Him, and is our "aiming
point." One day we can look forward to living forever in God's own "Ground
Zero" -- our ultimate home -- in Heaven.
Outline of the book
Chap.1 -- How I Got to Where I Am -- A brief autobiography to set the stage
for the remainder of the book, and to explain why I was led to begin
questioning my previous beliefs.
Chap.2 -- Defining Some Terms -- Explanations of many of the terms we often
hear, but often don't understand. An outline of the differences between
Biblical Creation and Naturalistic Evolution, and the effect these differences
have on Christian doctrines.
Chap.3 -- Arguments Favoring Creation -- Many reasons and evidences, with
descriptions and documented quotations from experts in both camps.
Chap.4 -- The Great Flood of Noah -- What many creationists believe about
this devastating flood, and how it could have resulted in the earth as we see
it today.
Chap.5 -- Arguments Against Macro-Evolution -- Many reasons and evidences,
with descriptions and documented quotations from many experts.
Chap.6 -- Religious and Philosophical Arguments -- Tells of the development
of important belief-systems, including religious liberalism. Shows how
compromises in literal Biblical belief have led to the undermining of
Christian doctrines. Describes the Documentary Hypothesis (the framework
usually used by religious "non-believers-in-Biblical-creation,") and contrasts
it with the Tablet Theory of Genesis Authorship (which lends much authenticity
to literal Biblical truth).
Section 7 -- Epilog -- The plan of salvation, and how it's the natural
follow-up to belief in God's miraculous creation. (very brief)
Section 8 -- Suggested Reading List -- My brief remarks about forty-some
books that have had an influence on creationism.
