  • ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder

Social Work Terms

  • 5150 - Police escort to a facility for observation or family safety
  • 5150.5 - New State law (AB1424) that allows family members to aid the medical staff. Each county must write their own procedures. San Mateo County is the first to implement this law.
  • Co-Occurring Disorders - Same as "Dual Diagnosis" (new term)
  • Dual Diagnosis - Mental Illness combined with Substance Abuse (old term)

  • IEP - Individual Educational Program
  • Labeling- Refusal by facility to make a diagnosis so as to not 'label' a patient or to avoid having the diagnosis become medically covered under MHPA
  • MHPA - Mental Health Parity Act - Forces health insurers to cover treatment and medications for seven mental illness as medical conditions.
  • SRP - Special Rate Pay (Subsidized Residential Program) - A "Board and Care" facility that uses SSI funds
  • SSI - Supplimental Security Income - Provided by Social Security Administration
  • TAR - Treatment Authorization Request

  • TCA- Tri-Cyclic / Hetero-Cyclic Anti-depressants

  • CRH - Corticotrophin Releasing Hormone
  • GABA- Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (Neurotransmitter, inhibits nerve-cell excitation)
