When I became an active believer, I was confused by many financial appeals under the Christian banner. I could not imagine someone would use Jesus for financial chicanery. A web page like this one did not exist in 1970 ... and 30 years later, brand new believers are still falling for every story in town.Jesus calls us to be as gentle as lambs but as wise (wary, cautious, suspicious, cross-checking, evaluating) as serpents. And in another place warns us about wolves in sheep's clothing, masquerading as angels of light. And also, we are the children of the light and not of darkness (not anymore at least!) ... and so this web page is to share names of reliable organizations, both old established ones and relatively new ones that are worthy of your financial support.
I list only a few ministry and mission organizations, but the one's listed have been personally inspected. I do not list all that I support and obviously cannot support all that are listed. These are just some starting places for your consideration.
Once on ANY mailing list with ANY organization, you will usually get monthly letters appealing for funds. All organizations prefer consistent giving to help them be better stewards in budgeting. Well then, how to decide among the many asking for help? One guideline is that I support groups that I would be willing to join as a mission-goer myself but send money for someone to go in my place. I become a mission-sender.
Usually after Christmas, I ask the Lord where he would like my funds to go for the coming year. I look over groups and individual missionaries funded last year and adjust as appropriate. I look at new ministry options and what my overall planned giving will be. I also set aside an amount for severe situations like natural disasters, persecuted believers, and stranded missionaries through no fault of their own. At the end of such a full day of introspection and prayer, I reach a sense of completion from God. I can then with a clear conscience toss appeal letters and send my regular planned amounts as agreed upon with the Lord. Much giving angst among new believers is due to what I call 'accidental giving' without a clear purpose.
